Add page numbers to a PDF, free, in your browser
Numbers at the bottom or top, left, centre or right, as 1, Page 1 or Page 1 of 12, starting at any number, with the cover left out if you like. Add a header and a footer with the file name or the date at the same time. Nothing is uploaded.

How numbering works here
- Drop the PDF. It opens in a worker in your tab. Several files are numbered one after another, each on its own.
- Pick where and how. Choose the corner or the centre, the format, the first number, and whether page 1 is a cover. Type a header or footer if you want one.
- Download. The numbers are written into each page as real text in a standard PDF font, so the file barely grows.
What it does
- Places the numbers where they look right on the page as shown, landscape and turned pages included.
- Writes real, searchable text that prints sharp.
- Fills {page}, {pages}, {date} and {file} in the header and footer.
- Moves a footer up a line when the numbers are at the bottom too.
What it does not do
- It uses a standard PDF font, which draws Latin letters; for headers in other scripts, add the text in the editor.
- It does not cover what is already printed where the numbers go; pick another corner or a bigger margin if they overlap.
- It does not use Roman numerals yet.
Questions
Can I skip the cover page?
Yes. Turn on Cover page: page 1 gets nothing, and the numbering starts on page 2 with the first number you set.
Can I start at a number other than 1?
Yes. Type any first number, for example 5 when the file continues another document.
Will the numbers be right on landscape pages?
Yes. They are placed on the page as it is shown, so a turned page gets its number at its own bottom edge, reading left to right.
Can I add the file name or the date?
Yes. Type {file} or {date} in the header or footer; {page} and {pages} give the page number and the total.
Does my file leave my computer?
No. Everything runs in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded.
