How form filling works here
- Open the form. Drop the PDF on the page or choose it. The editor opens with its fields marked in blue.
- Fill it in. Click a field to type, click a box to tick it, pick from a list. Tab goes to the next field. Undo takes back any value.
- Save it. Save keeps it a form, so it can still be changed. Save flattened turns the values into the page itself, so they cannot be changed and every reader shows them.
What it does
- Writes the values through the PDF engine Chrome uses, so Acrobat, Preview and Edge show the same thing.
- Draws letters the form's own font lacks with a bundled font, so a name with ł or ř shows in full.
- Refuses to change fields the form marks as read-only.
- Lets you add text anywhere on a form that has no fields, with the Add text tool.
What it does not do
- It does not run a form's calculations (JavaScript); totals that a form computes must be typed in.
- It does not create new fields in a form yet.
- It does not fill XFA forms, the older format some government forms use; flatten those in Adobe Reader first.
Questions
My PDF has no fields to click. Can I still fill it in?
Yes. Pick the Add text tool, click on each line and type. The text is real text in the file.
What is the difference between saving and saving flattened?
Saving keeps the fields, so you or someone else can change the values later. Flattened turns them into ordinary page content: nobody can change them, and every app shows them the same way.
Will Adobe Reader show what I typed?
Yes. The values are written into the form as PDF readers expect, with their appearance drawn.
Can I sign the form too?
Yes. Click a Sign here field, or pick the Sign tool and click where the signature goes.
Does my file leave my computer?
No. The form opens and is saved in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded.
