How unlocking works here
- Drop the file. If it needs a password to open, the page asks for it. The password is used in this tab only.
- Unlock. The engine opens the file with the password and writes it back without the encryption dictionary.
- Download. An open copy, the same pages, text and images, checked by re-opening it.
What it does
- Removes the password to open, when you have it.
- Removes owner restrictions (no printing, no copying) from a file that opens without a password.
- Keeps everything else: bookmarks, forms, metadata.
What it does not do
- It does not guess or crack a password; without the password the file stays closed.
- It is for files you own or are allowed to use; removing restrictions from someone else's document may be against their licence or the law where you are.
- It does not remove a digital signature.
Questions
I do not know the password. Can it still open?
No. The password is the key the file is encrypted with; there is no way round it and this site does not try.
The file opens but will not print or copy. Is that a password?
That is an owner restriction. The file opens without a password and this tool writes a copy without the restriction.
Is it legal?
For your own files and files you are allowed to use, yes. For a document someone else protected, check their terms; the restriction may be part of a licence.
Does my password leave my computer?
No. It is used by the engine in your browser tab and discarded. The site has no server that could receive it.
