Add a blank page to a PDF, and write on it straight away
By the getPDF team · Published 11 October 2026
The short answer
To add a blank page to a PDF, open it at getpdfs.app/edit, open the menu on page 3 in the page list and choose Add a blank page after. The new page takes the size of the page before it. Press T, click the new page and type your addendum or notes, then save. It runs on your device; nothing is uploaded.
Insert the blank page
- Open the PDF at getpdfs.app/edit. On a computer the page list runs down the left side; on a phone tap More, then Pages.
- Find the page the new one goes after, say page 3 of a lease. Open its menu: the button with 3 dots on the thumbnail (under the thumbnail on a phone).
- Choose Add a blank page after. A white page appears as page 4, and everything after it moves down 1.
The other route is the Add pages button under the page list, then Blank page: it adds the page after the one you are looking at. The same button also adds Pages from a PDF and Pictures as pages.
The new page is the size of the page before it, standing upright: A4 after an A4 page, Letter after a Letter page. Its position can change like any page: drag it in the list, or use Move earlier and Move later in its menu.
Write on it straight away
- Press T, or pick Text in the tools (the bottom bar on a phone).
- Click near the top left of the new page, about where the body text starts on the other pages.
- Type. Shift+Enter starts a new line; Enter places the text.
- Match the document: the options bar offers Sans, Serif or Mono, bold, italic, size, colour, alignment and line spacing. The size starts at 12 point; match it to the body text on the pages around it.
New text is real text, set in Helvetica, Times or Courier, the standard fonts every PDF viewer has; a letter they lack (ł, ř, Greek, Cyrillic) brings in a matching Liberation font, embedded in the file. Lines do not wrap by themselves, so break them with Shift+Enter where you want them. For a long addendum, write it in short paragraphs, each its own text block, which also makes them easy to move. Adding text to a PDF is the same tool on its own page.
We measured the cost on our 3-page invoice test file: 2,318 bytes as made, 2,462 bytes with a blank A4 page added, and 4,157 bytes with 3 lines of addendum text on it. A blank page is close to free, and a page of typed text costs a few kilobytes.
The addendum pattern: make the addition obvious
A page added to a document someone else wrote should never pass for part of the original. When you add terms to a lease or a quote before sending it back for discussion:
- Head the page clearly: “Addendum 1 to the lease of 1 October 2026, added by Jane Cooper on 11 October 2026”.
- Refer to what it changes: “Clause 4.2, the notice period, is proposed as 2 months instead of 3.”
- Leave room for both sides to sign and date, or use the Sign tool to add your own signature and the date.
- Say so in your message when you send it: “I added a page 4 with 2 proposed changes.”
What an addendum means legally depends on the contract and the law that governs it. This guide explains the tool, not the law; ask a professional when it matters.
One case needs care: a PDF with a digital signature. The editor keeps that signature valid by appending your changes after the signed bytes, and says so when it saves. The signed version stays inside the file, and your page is visibly an addition to it.
Mixed page sizes
When a document mixes A4 and Letter, or portrait and landscape, the new page copies the page before it, upright. We checked on a test file with 4 pages in 4 sizes and turns: after a Letter page shown sideways, the blank page comes out as Letter standing up. There is no size menu for a blank page. To change it:
- Landscape: open the new page’s menu and choose Turn right or Turn left.
- A different paper size: add the blank page after a page of the size you want, then move it with Move earlier or Move later, or by dragging.
The organiser does it too, without the writing
Organise PDF also adds blank pages: Add a blank page at the end, then Up and Down to move it into place. It copies pages without changing them and is quick for a pure reshuffle, but it cannot write on the new page, and it does not carry the file’s bookmarks into the new order. For adding and writing in 1 pass, the editor is the better fit. Big reorganising jobs (merging files, extracting pages, reversing a scan) are covered in the organising guide.
The honest part
- Built-in apps can add a blank page too. On a Mac, Preview does it under Edit, Insert, Blank Page, per Apple’s Preview User Guide; on an iPhone, Preview’s page thumbnails offer Insert Blank Page, per Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 26 (both checked on 11 October 2026). If you only need an empty page, that is enough. Come here when you want to write on it in the same sitting.
- Printed page numbers do not renumber. They are text on each page. A document numbered “Page 4 of 10” still says so on the page that is now page 5. Fix it with find and replace, or number the pages afresh with Add page numbers on a file that has none.
- Nothing flows onto the new page. Text on page 3 does not continue onto page 4 by itself; a PDF page is a fixed canvas. The new page holds only what you put on it.
- Every step undoes. Added the page in the wrong place? Ctrl+Z, or move it. How undo works covers what the history keeps until you close the file.
Questions
How do I insert a page from another PDF instead of a blank one?
In the editor, choose Add pages, then Pages from a PDF, and pick the file: all its pages go in after the page you are looking at. To take only some of them, delete the rest from the page list afterwards, or see the organising guide for merging and extracting.
Will the page numbers update by themselves?
No. Page numbers printed on a PDF's pages are ordinary text, written when the file was made, so a new page does not renumber the others. The viewer's own page counter does change. Fix printed numbers with find and replace, or add a fresh set with Add page numbers.
How do I remove the page again?
Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) if it was your last step. Otherwise open the page's menu and choose Delete page. Before you save, nothing is final.
Can I add the blank page at the very front?
Yes, in 2 steps: add it after page 1, then open its menu and choose Move earlier. Or drag it to the front of the page list. A cover page made that way takes the size of page 1.
What size is the new page?
The size of the page before it, standing upright. In an A4 document it is A4; after a Letter page it is Letter. If the page before was turned sideways, turn the new one too with Turn left or Turn right in its menu.
