Merge PDF files on your phone, no app needed
By the getPDF team · Published 11 October 2026
The short answer
Open Merge PDF in Safari or Chrome on your phone, tap Choose files and pick the PDFs, put them in order with Up and Down, then tap Merge and Download PDF. There is no app to install and no account. The files are merged inside the browser on your phone; nothing is uploaded.

Merge on the phone, step by step
- Open this page in Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android), or go to getpdfs.app/merge-pdf.
- Tap Choose files. The phone’s own file picker opens. Tap each PDF you want; on most phones you can pick several in 1 go. The first time, the page fetches its engine once and keeps it on the phone.
- Add more if they live elsewhere. Tap Choose files again for files in another folder; each pick goes to the end of the list.
- Set the order. Each row shows the file name, its page count and size. Tap Up or Down to move a file, Remove to drop one.
- Tap Merge, then Download PDF. The file is named after the first file, with
-mergedon the end.
The pages are copied as they were, so scans keep their quality and every page keeps its size. With Bookmark per file on, the merged PDF has an outline with 1 entry per file, each file’s own bookmarks folded under it, handy when you scroll a long result on a small screen.
Where the merged file goes
- iPhone: Safari puts it in the Downloads folder of the Files app: open Files, tap Browse, then Downloads. Apple’s support page “Where to find downloads on your iPhone or iPad” places that folder in iCloud Drive by default (checked on 11 October 2026).
- Android: Chrome saves it to the Download folder. Open it from Chrome’s menu, then Downloads, or from your Files app.
From there, the share button sends it to Mail, WhatsApp or a portal’s upload page. Attach it as a document so it stays a PDF.
Finding the files to merge
The merge itself takes seconds; finding the files usually takes longer. Where to look in the picker:
| The file came from | iPhone (Files picker) | Android (file picker) |
|---|---|---|
| A download in the browser | Downloads | Downloads |
| An email attachment | Wherever you saved it: tap the attachment, then Share, then Save to Files | Downloads, if you tapped download in the mail app |
| A chat app | Not there until you save it: open the PDF in the chat and share it to Files | Often not in Downloads: open the PDF in the chat and share or save it first |
| A cloud drive | iCloud Drive, or the drive under Locations | Tap the menu in the picker and choose the drive |
| A scanner app | The folder the app saves to, or share from the app | The folder the app saves to, or share from the app |
When a file will not show up, the quick fix works in every app: open the PDF there, tap its Share button, and save a copy to Files (iPhone) or Downloads (Android). Then it is in the picker. Menu names differ between phone makers and system versions; Recent and the search field in the picker usually find a file you just saved.
Why no app?
A merge app is 1 more thing on your phone that asks for access to your files and storage, and many free ones carry ads or a subscription. The browser already has what the job needs: it reads the files you pick, merges them in the tab, and saves the result. Nothing goes to a server.
You can check that on the phone itself: merge 2 files once with the network on, so the engine is kept, then switch on airplane mode and merge 2 more. It still works, because there is nowhere for the files to go. Prove a PDF tool is local explains the check in more depth.
On an iPhone there is also a built-in way: in the Files app, tap the More button, then Select, choose the PDFs, tap More again and then Create PDF. iGeeksBlog’s guide (updated 7 September 2026, checked on 11 October 2026) says the files join in name order, so rename them first to control the order, and that the result takes the first file’s name. We did not find this in Apple’s own documentation. It is a fine choice for 2 or 3 files; the tool here shows the order as a list before you merge.
Photos and PDFs together
Merge takes PDFs. To add a photo of a receipt or a page you took with the camera, make it a PDF first:
JPG to PDFImages to pages, size and margins. Free, runs on your device.Pick the photos in JPG to PDF (it reads iPhone HEIC photos and most other formats), tap Make the PDF, then merge that PDF with the rest. Pictures to PDF covers the settings.
The honest part
A phone has less memory than a laptop, and a browser tab gets only a share of it. Merging a few documents and scans is a routine job on a phone. Dozens of large scans at once can be more than the browser can hold. If the page reports that a file or the result is too big for this browser, merge in smaller groups and then merge the groups, or do the big job on a computer, where the same page works with more room. For a lot of files at once, Combine PDF files without Acrobat shows the same tool on Windows and Mac.
The merge keeps each file’s bookmarks (under its own entry), its links between pages and its form fields, which stay fillable. What it leaves behind is the files’ title and author: the merged file has none. For documents and scans you send from a phone, that rarely matters.
Questions
How do I merge PDFs on an iPhone without an app?
Open getpdfs.app/merge-pdf in Safari, tap Choose files, pick the PDFs in Files, set the order with Up and Down, tap Merge and then Download PDF. The merged file lands in Downloads in the Files app.
How do I merge PDFs on Android?
Open getpdfs.app/merge-pdf in Chrome, tap Choose files, pick the PDFs, put them in order with Up and Down, tap Merge and Download PDF. The file goes to your Download folder.
Can I pick files from different folders?
Yes. Tap Choose files once for each folder: the first PDFs from Downloads, then tap Choose files again for 2 from Drive. Each pick is added to the end of the list, and you set the order afterwards.
Is there a limit on files?
No count and no size cap. The limit is your phone's memory, which is smaller than a laptop's. If a job is too big for the browser, use a computer or merge in smaller groups.
Can I merge photos and PDFs on my phone?
Yes, in 2 steps. Turn the photos into a PDF with JPG to PDF, which reads iPhone HEIC photos too, then merge that PDF with the others.
