Rotated a PDF but it opens sideways again? Make the rotation stick

By the getPDF team · Published 11 October 2026

The short answer

The rotate button in a PDF viewer usually turns only your view of the file; close it and the rotation is gone. To make it stick, drop the PDF on Rotate PDF, pick the turn and the pages, click Rotate and download the new file: the rotation is written into each page, so it opens upright in every viewer. It runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Why the rotation did not stick

A PDF page has a rotation value stored with it: 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Every viewer reads that value and shows the page turned by it. The rotate buttons in most viewers do something else: they turn the picture on your screen and leave that value alone. Nothing is written into the file, so nothing is there the next time you open it, or when someone else opens it.

Two paths from a sideways page. Top path: rotate in a viewer, the screen shows it upright, the file is unchanged and opens sideways again. Bottom path: Rotate PDF writes rotation 90 into the page and saves a new file, which opens upright everywhere.sidewayspageviewer: rotate viewscreen onlyfile unchangedreopens sidewaysRotate PDFrotation 0 to 90new file savedupright in every viewer
2 kinds of rotation. Turning the view changes your screen only; saving a rotation writes the turn into the page, so every viewer shows it.

Which rotate buttons only change the view

  • Acrobat Reader: View, then Rotate View, turns the display. Adobe’s community experts say it is never written to the file and Reader has no way to save it; rotating pages for good is the Organize Pages tool in paid Acrobat (Adobe Community, checked on 11 October 2026). The free and paid options are set side by side on our Acrobat comparison.
  • Browser viewers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): the rotate button sits with zoom and fit-to-page among the reading controls. Microsoft’s own page on Edge’s PDF reader lists Rotate among its “reading and navigation features” (Microsoft Learn, checked on 11 October 2026). Treat it as view-only until the reopen test below says otherwise.
  • Preview on a Mac is the exception: Rotate Left and Rotate Right change the document, and Apple’s guide says changes to a Preview document are saved automatically (Apple Support, checked on 11 October 2026). If Preview is your viewer, its rotation sticks.

A file that “keeps opening rotated” can also have the wrong rotation stored in it from the start, from a scanner or a phone app. The fix is the same: write the right one.

Save the rotation into the file

  1. Drop the PDF on Rotate PDF above. Several files at once are fine; each gets its own download.
  2. Under Turn, choose 90° right, 90° left or 180°. Pick the turn that brings the page upright from how it opens now, not from how your viewer last showed it.
  3. Under Pages, choose All, Odd, Even, or Some and type the pages, as 2, 5-7.
  4. Click Rotate and download the copy, named after your file with -rotated on the end.

The result says what it did, for example “Turned 1 page by 90 degrees” and “A true rotation: nothing re-rendered, text stays text”. On our sideways test scan the file went from 34,836 to 34,779 bytes: the same pages with 1 number changed. Text stays selectable, links and bookmarks stay where they were, and a 500-page file took 0.6 seconds to turn.

To turn just 1 or 2 pages while you also reorder or remove pages, use Turn on the page’s row in Organise PDF: each click adds a quarter turn, then Apply. Rotate single PDF pages covers mixed pages in detail.

Check it like a sceptic

The test that settles it takes 20 seconds:

  1. Close the file everywhere.
  2. Open the saved copy in a different viewer from the one you rotated in: if you rotated in the browser, open it in Preview, Acrobat Reader, or on your phone.
  3. If it is upright there too, the rotation is in the file. If not, you are looking at the original, not the -rotated copy.

Use the same test on any other app that claims to rotate: rotate, save, close, open somewhere else.

The honest part

Rotation turns the page; it does not straighten it. A scan that is crooked by 3 degrees stays crooked by 3 degrees after any number of quarter turns. Straightening a skewed scan is not something our tools do yet; rescanning with the page against the scanner’s edge is the quick fix.

A photo that comes out sideways in a PDF has a different cause, the camera’s orientation note; Photos come out sideways in a PDF explains it.

Some systems may still show it sideways. The rotation value is part of the PDF standard and Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, Edge and phone viewers all apply it. If a portal, a print shop or an old program you send to still shows the page turned, the blunt last resort is to bake the turn into the picture: PDF to JPG, then JPG to PDF. That works everywhere, but the pages become pictures: the text is no longer selectable or searchable, and the file usually gets bigger. Try it only when the receiver has really shown the problem, and keep the rotated PDF as your copy.

Questions

Why does my PDF go back to sideways when I reopen it?

Because the rotate button you used turned your view of the file, not the file. Most PDF viewers rotate the display only; close the file and that view is gone. A rotate tool that saves a new file writes the turn into each page.

How do I rotate a PDF permanently for free?

Drop it on Rotate PDF, choose 90° right, 90° left or 180° and which pages, click Rotate and download. Each page's rotation is written into the new file, so every viewer shows it the same way.

Does rotating reduce the quality?

No. The page carries a rotation value that viewers apply; nothing is redrawn. Our sideways test scan was 34,836 bytes before and 34,779 after, and its text stays text.

Can Acrobat Reader save a rotation?

Not with Rotate View, which Adobe's community experts describe as a display setting that is never written to the file. Rotating pages for good is in paid Acrobat's Organize Pages tool.

Only 1 page is sideways. Do I have to turn them all?

No. In Rotate PDF choose Some and type the page, for example 4, or use Turn on that page's row in Organise PDF.
