Remove text from a PDF properly, so it is gone and not just hidden
By the getPDF team · Published 11 October 2026
The short answer
Open the PDF at /edit, click the line of text and press Delete, then save. The text leaves the page content, and because the editor writes the saved file anew, it is gone from the file too: in our test the deleted words could not be selected, searched or found in the file’s bytes. The page does not reflow, so a gap stays; for names, numbers or anything sensitive, use redaction rather than delete.

On our invoice test file, the line “Payable within 30 days by bank transfer.” has to go.
- Open the PDF at /edit. The Select tool is in hand (press V if not).
- Click the line once. A box appears around it and the panel on the right says “Selected · Text” and shows the words.
- Press Delete or Backspace, or click Delete in the panel.
- Save with the Save button or Ctrl+S.
To delete several lines, drag a box across them starting on empty space, or Shift+click each one; Delete all removes them together. To delete only part of a line, double-click it instead, remove the words you do not want, and press Enter.
How much one click selects depends on how the PDF was made. In many files each line is one piece of text; in others a line is split into words or even single letters, and a click selects only that piece. Drag a box across the whole line to be sure you have all of it.
Check that it is really gone
The test that matters is the saved file, not the screen. Open the saved copy in any viewer, press Ctrl+A to select all, copy, and paste into a plain text editor. On our invoice the paste gave the 2 lines above (“Invoice 2026-0412” and “Invoice total: 1,190.00 EUR”) and the small test line at the foot of the page, with no sign of the deleted one; a search for “Payable” found nothing; and the word appeared nowhere in the file’s bytes.
What the page looks like afterwards
A PDF page is not a word-processor page. Every line sits at fixed coordinates, so when one goes, the lines below stay where they were and a gap opens.
You can close it or leave it:
- Drag a box across everything below the gap, starting on empty space, so it is selected together.
- Drag the block up, or press the up arrow with Shift held to move it 10 points at a time (1 point without Shift). Its edges catch on the lines above as you go.
- Stop when the spacing matches the rest of the page, and save.
On a page with a footer, a page number or a signature line at the bottom, leave those where they are and move only the body text.
Deleting versus covering versus redacting
Three things people call “removing text” leave three different files behind:
| What you do | On the page | In the saved file |
|---|---|---|
| Draw a white box over it | Hidden | Still there: selects, searches, copies out |
| Delete it in the getPDF editor | Gone, a gap stays | Gone: no copy of the line in the file |
| Redact it with Redact PDF | A black box | Gone, with everything else under the box |
The white box is white-out, and the white-out comparison shows it on the same invoice. Delete is the right tool for an ordinary line in your own document: a superseded clause in a draft, an old address in a template, a “Draft” label.
Removing visible text is not redaction
This is the part that matters when the text is a name, an account number, a diagnosis or a salary. Deleting a line removes that line. It does not look anywhere else, and a PDF has many other places for the same words:
- the same name on another page, in a header, or split across 2 pieces of text;
- the document’s properties (title, author, subject), which viewers show under file information;
- bookmarks, form fields, notes and comments;
- a picture of the text, such as a scanned signature block or a pasted screenshot.
On a digitally signed file there is one more: the editor adds your changes after the signed version, so the signature stays valid for what was signed, and it says so when you save. The signed version, with the deleted line, is still inside that file.
For anything sensitive, use Redact PDF: it takes out everything under each box, writes a new file and reports what it removed, and its personal data finder marks emails, phone numbers, IBANs and card numbers for you to check, lists dates unticked, and reads typed form fields and scans made searchable by OCR too. The privacy and protection guide covers the properties and the other hiding places.
Text on a scanned page
A scan is a photo of a page, so there is no text to delete: a click selects the whole page picture. OCR PDF adds a layer of recognised text that you can select and search, but deleting those words removes only that invisible layer; the ink in the picture stays. To make words on a scan disappear, redact them (redaction paints over the picture’s pixels) or, for a printout only, cover them with a white rectangle from the Shape tool.
What delete cannot do
Delete does not reflow paragraphs: the lines around a deletion stay put until you move them, and the editor does not rewrap a paragraph to fill a gap. It cannot reach text inside a picture or inside some grouped content, where a click selects the whole group. And it removes exactly what you select, nothing more, which is why the boundary above matters. For retyping text instead of removing it, see Edit a PDF; for the same words on many pages, Find and replace with an empty replacement deletes them all at once.
Questions
How do I remove the same footer from every page?
Press Ctrl+H in the editor, type the footer's text, leave Replace with empty and choose Replace all. Every match is deleted, and a line left empty is taken off the page. It is 1 change, so 1 Ctrl+Z brings every footer back.
Does removing text make the file smaller?
A little. Text is light: deleting a 40-character line from our 1-page invoice took the saved file from 2,328 to 2,248 bytes. Pictures and fonts are what make PDFs heavy.
Can I undo after deleting?
Yes, while the file is open: Ctrl+Z undoes each step, and the Changes list on the right shows them all. After you save and close, the saved copy holds no trace of the text, so keep the original if you might need it.
Is deleting text the same as redacting it?
For the line you delete, the text is gone from the saved file. Redaction goes further: it takes out everything under a box, text, picture pixels, drawings, links and form fields, and it works on scans. For anything sensitive, redact.
