Save a PDF on an iPhone, from any app that can print

By the getPDF team · Published 11 October 2026

The short answer

On an iPhone, any app that can print can save a PDF: open Print (usually from the Share button), tap Share at the top of the print screen and choose Save to Files. On older iOS versions, pinch out on the page preview first and the Share button appears. In Safari there is a direct route too: Share, then Options under the page name, PDF, Done, Save to Files. To join several PDFs or shrink one for an upload, the tools here run in Safari on the phone and nothing is uploaded.

No app to install, no account. The PDF lands in the Files app, where every upload button and mail can find it. The usual next job is putting a ticket, a confirmation and an insurance page into 1 file:

How do I make a PDF from any app on an iPhone?

The print screen is a PDF maker. MacMost’s guide “How To Create a PDF From Almost Any App On Your iPhone” (23 July 2026) describes this as the main route on iOS 26 and later:

  1. Open Print in the app. In Mail, tap the reply button and choose Print. In Photos, Notes and most other apps it is under Share. In Safari, open Share first (next section).
  2. Tap Share at the top of the print screen. Do not pick a printer.
  3. Choose Save to Files, pick a folder, rename the file if you like, and tap Save.

The older pinch trick still works and is the route on iOS versions before 26: on the print screen, put 2 fingers on the small page preview and spread them apart. The preview opens full screen as a PDF, with its own Share button. The pinch is also the way to look at every page before you save, and on recent iOS the print screen has a Preview button that opens the PDF in Apple’s Preview app for the same purpose.

How do I save a web page as a PDF in Safari?

Safari’s own PDF option:

  1. Tap Share. Since iOS 26, Safari’s default compact layout keeps Share in the menu behind the button with 3 dots; with the Bottom or Top tab layout (Settings, Apps, Safari) it is on the toolbar.
  2. Tap Options, just under the page name at the top of the share sheet.
  3. Choose PDF under Send As, then tap Done.
  4. Tap Save to Files, pick a folder and tap Save.

A full-page screenshot captures the whole page as 1 long sheet instead of printed pages: press the side button and volume up together, tap the thumbnail, choose Full Page, then Done and Save PDF to Files (steps from iGeeksBlog, checked on 11 October 2026).

Which one? The print route gives normal pages, right for something that may be printed or uploaded to a portal. The full-page screenshot is 1 tall page that reads well on a phone but prints badly. Before either, dismiss the cookie banner: it is part of the page and ends up in the PDF. The web page guide has more on clean captures.

Where do PDFs go on an iPhone?

Into the Files app, in the folder you chose:

  • On My iPhone keeps the file on this phone only.
  • iCloud Drive syncs it to your Mac, iPad and iCloud.com.
  • Downloads is where Safari puts files it downloads, including results from the tools on this site; Apple’s guide “Where to find downloads on your iPhone or iPad” places it in iCloud Drive by default (checked on 11 October 2026).

When a website’s upload button asks for a file, it opens the same Files browser: Recents at the bottom shows what you saved last. Name files so you can find them again: Jane-Cooper-booking.pdf beats Untitled.pdf.

What about photos of paper?

A photo of a contract is an image, not a PDF, and the print route turns it into a PDF that is still just a picture. For paper, use the scanner instead: in Notes or Files, Scan Documents finds the page edges, straightens and crops the page, and saves a PDF. For photos you already took, JPG to PDF puts them into 1 PDF and reads iPhone HEIC photos too; the iPhone photos guide walks through it.

After saving: merge or shrink, still on the phone

These tools run in Safari on your iPhone. Nothing is uploaded: use one once, turn on aeroplane mode, and it still works, because the file has nowhere to go.

  1. Merge. On the tool above, tap Choose files and pick the PDFs from Files (several at once are fine). Set the order with Up and Down and tap Merge, then Download PDF. The result goes to Downloads in Files, named after the first file with -merged on the end.
  2. Shrink for a portal. Portals often cap uploads at a few MB: the US National Visa Center takes 4 MB per file (checked on 11 October 2026). Compress PDF takes a size target and keeps the best quality that fits; the iPhone compression guide has the steps.
  3. Sign or add text. Apple’s Markup does a quick signature; for editing text in a PDF, see edit a PDF on iPhone.

Where the built-in route falls short

Apps that cannot print (some banking and travel apps) have no Print in their Share sheet; a screenshot, then Print from the screenshot’s Share, is the fallback, and it gives you a picture, not text. Very long web pages and web apps may cut off or print only what is on screen. And getPDF does not create PDFs from apps or web pages: the iPhone does that part, and we help with the file afterwards. On Android the same job looks different; see create a PDF for every platform.
