WhatsApp images to 1 PDF, on your phone

By the getPDF team · Published 11 October 2026

The short answer

Save the images from the chat to your phone’s gallery, open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap Choose files, pick them in order and tap Make the PDF, then Download PDF. Send it back in WhatsApp as a Document, which keeps the file exactly as it is. The photos are turned into a PDF on your phone; nothing is forwarded to a converter.

Jana Čermák’s landlord in Graz needs the 6 pages of her signed lease as 1 PDF. Her flatmate photographed them and sent them to her on WhatsApp. Here is the whole path, on either phone.

1. Get the images out of the chat

WhatsApp’s Media visibility setting decides whether received photos land in your gallery. It is on by default (WhatsApp Help Center, checked on 11 October 2026).

On Android

  1. Check the setting: in WhatsApp, More options (the 3 dots), Settings, Chats, Show media in gallery.
  2. Open the gallery or Google Photos and look for the album WhatsApp Images; downloaded chat photos are there.
  3. Not there? Open the photo in the chat, tap the 3 dots and save or share it to your gallery. For a single chat, tap the contact’s name, then Media visibility, and set it to Yes.

On iPhone

  1. Turn on Save to Camera Roll: WhatsApp, Settings, Chats. From then on, downloaded photos go to Photos.
  2. For photos already in the chat, open each one, tap the share button and choose Save.

Two exceptions from WhatsApp’s help pages: “view once” photos are never saved, and a photo you deleted from the phone cannot be downloaded again from the chat, so the sender has to send it again.

2. What WhatsApp already did to the photos

Photos sent the normal way are compressed on the way. WhatsApp’s help says media “might be lower” in quality than the original because it is compressed when shared, and that applies to the HD option too, which is clearer than Standard but still not the original (WhatsApp Help Center, checked on 11 October 2026). A photo of a page may arrive smaller and softer than the one the sender took.

That has a consequence for the PDF: the converter keeps every pixel it is given, so the PDF looks exactly as good as what arrived, no better. On our test set of 10 chat-size pictures (1600 by 1200 pixels, about 160 KB each), the PDF came out at 1.6 MB: the JPG pictures were copied in as they were, with no second compression.

Top path: the original photo is sent as a photo, WhatsApp compresses it, a smaller softer picture arrives and becomes a soft PDF page. Bottom path: the same photo is sent as a Document, it arrives as the original file and becomes a sharp PDF page.Originalphoto, 3 MBsent as a photosent as a Documentcompressed: smaller, softer, cannot be undonethe original file, byte for bytePDF pagePDF page
Two ways a photo travels through WhatsApp. Sent as a photo it is compressed; sent as a document it arrives untouched. The PDF keeps whatever arrived.

3. Select, order, convert

The same 3 steps work in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone:

  1. Open JPG to PDF (or the tool above) and tap Choose files. On Android pick from Photos, Gallery or Files and open the WhatsApp Images album; on iPhone choose Photo Library. Select all the pages, in order if your picker allows.
  2. Check the order. The file list is the page order. WhatsApp names saved images by date and a counter (such as IMG-20261010-WA0003.jpg), which usually matches the order they were sent. Move a page with Up or Down, drop a stray with Remove.
  3. Pick the page and convert. For document photos, Paper A4, Orientation Portrait and a Margin of 5 to 10 mm; for holiday photos, “Same as the picture”. Tap Make the PDF, then Download PDF.

On Android the PDF goes to the Download folder. On iPhone, Safari asks you to confirm the download and puts the PDF in the Downloads folder of the Files app (in iCloud Drive unless you changed it under Settings, Safari, Downloads).

Several pictures came in different chats? Convert each set, then join the PDFs in order with Merge PDF.

4. Send the PDF back as a Document

  1. Open the chat and tap the attachment button (the paperclip on Android, the + on iPhone).
  2. Choose Document, then find the PDF: Download on Android, Files on iPhone.
  3. Send. WhatsApp sends documents as they are, up to 2 GB each, with no recompression.

At 1.6 MB for 10 chat pictures, the PDF goes through WhatsApp and any mailbox easily. If it is going to a portal with a small limit, Compress PDF on the Email preset took our 10-picture file to 779 KB.

Next time: ask for the originals

The trick that fixes quality in both directions is the same Document button. Ask the sender to attach the photos with Document (WhatsApp lets you choose photos from the gallery there) instead of the photo button. They arrive as the original files, at full resolution, and go into your PDF untouched. Do the same when you send photos of paperwork to someone else.

The honest part

A badly compressed photo stays bad. If a photo of a dense page, small print or a form with tick boxes arrived blurred, no PDF tool can make it readable, ours included; sharpening tricks only make the blur look crisper. Ask the sender to share it again as a Document, or to send a scan.

Screenshots of chats are different. If the PDF should show the conversation itself, for a complaint or as a record, take screenshots instead; they are PNG files and the converter keeps them lossless. The chat screenshots guide covers doing that so the record is complete and dated.

It does not make the text searchable. The pages are pictures. Run OCR PDF on the result if the reader needs to search or copy the text.

Nothing is uploaded. Photos of leases, IDs and bank letters travel through WhatsApp every day; the conversion should not add another stop. This one runs in your browser on the phone. Questions

Where are WhatsApp images saved on my phone?

With Media visibility on, which is the default, downloaded photos go to the phone's gallery: on Android usually in an album called WhatsApp Images, on iPhone in Photos once Save to Camera Roll is on. Otherwise open the photo in the chat and save it from there.

Why do the photos look worse than the originals?

WhatsApp compresses photos sent the normal way, and its help pages say even HD photos may be lower quality than the original. Turning them into a PDF keeps what you received; it cannot bring back what was lost.

How do I send the PDF back on WhatsApp?

In the chat, tap the attachment button, choose Document and pick the PDF. A document is sent as the file it is, up to 2 GB, with no recompression.

Can I get the original quality photos?

Ask the sender to share them as a Document instead of as photos. WhatsApp then sends the original file untouched, and the photos go into your PDF at full quality.

Is anything uploaded to make the PDF?

No. The converter runs in your phone's browser. Nothing goes to a converter site or bot, and you can check it by converting once and then switching on aeroplane mode.
