Edit a PDF on your phone: the quick fix, in the browser
By the getPDF team · Published 11 October 2026
The short answer
To edit a PDF on your phone, open getpdfs.app/edit in the phone’s browser, tap Choose a PDF and pick the file. Double-tap the line you want to change, type the fix, tap outside it, then tap Save. There is no app to install, and the editor runs in the browser on your phone, so the file is never uploaded.
How do I edit a PDF on my phone?
The editor on a phone is the same one a laptop gets, rearranged for a narrow screen. A fixed date on our 3-page invoice test file takes under a minute:
- Open getpdfs.app/edit in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or the browser your phone came with. Nothing to install.
- Tap Choose a PDF. The phone’s own file picker opens: Downloads, Drive, Files, whatever your phone offers. The first time, the page fetches its engine (4.6 MB, once); after that it opens from the phone.
- Find the line. One finger scrolls the pages. Two fingers pinch to zoom in on small print before you tap.
- Double-tap the line you want to change. A box opens on the line with its text inside. (Or tap the line once and tap Edit in the bar that comes up.)
- Type the fix, for example the total from 1,190.00 to 1,250.00, and tap Enter on the keyboard, or tap outside the box.
- Tap Save at the top right. The edited copy is saved as a new file with
-editedon the end of its name, so the original stays as it was.
The text you typed is real text, not a picture pasted over the old line: it stays selectable and searchable in any PDF viewer, and the old words are not left in the file. The editing guide explains how that works.
What the phone layout looks like
Below 1,024 pixels of width the editor switches to its phone layout. Everything is in reach of a thumb: every button is at least 44 pixels tall, and text boxes use a 16 px font so the phone does not zoom in when you tap one.
The bottom bar holds the 9 tools: Select, Text, Mark (highlight, underline, strike through), Note, Sign, Draw, Shape, Picture and Redact. The More button in the top row opens a sheet with Zoom and Fit, Find and replace, Pages, Changes, the ways to save, and the status line: “Nothing is uploaded · edited on this device”.
Touch basics that make it workable
- Tap selects, double-tap edits. A tap on a line, a picture or a mark selects it and brings up a bar with Edit (for text), Style, a copy button, a delete button and a close button. The page scrolls so the selection stays above the bar.
- Drag a selection to move it. Put your finger on the selected object and slide.
- One finger scrolls, two fingers zoom, in every tool except the ones that draw. With Draw in hand, 1 finger draws and 2 fingers still zoom.
- Style opens the properties as a sheet from the bottom: font, size, colour, and the rest for whatever is selected.
- Undo is in the top row, and every step undoes, a retyped line as much as a deleted page.
To add text where there was none, tap Text, tap the spot on the page and type. To highlight, tap Mark and drag across the words; for a page of highlights on its own, Highlight PDF opens straight into that tool.
Pages on a phone
Tap More, then Pages. The sheet shows every page as a thumbnail with a menu button under it: Turn left, Turn right, Copy page, Add a blank page after, Move earlier, Move later and Delete page. To move a page by hand, hold it still for a moment until it lifts, then drag it; a quick swipe still scrolls the list. Add pages at the bottom adds a blank page, the pages of another PDF, or photos as pages. A tap on a thumbnail takes you to that page.
The jobs that suit a phone
| Job | On a phone | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fix a typo, a date, an amount | Good | Double-tap, type, save |
| Fill a form field, sign | Good | Tinted fields take a tap; the Sign pad takes a finger |
| Highlight a clause, add a note | Good | Drag across words, tap for a note |
| Delete or turn a page | Good | The Pages sheet, 1 menu per page |
| Line up several objects to the point | Fiddly | A finger covers what you are aligning |
| Lay out a page, compare 2 documents | Use a bigger screen | 1 page at a time, no room side by side |
Saving and sending it on
Save writes a PDF with your changes and hands it to the browser as a download. On Android, Chrome puts it in the Downloads folder, where the Files app finds it and its share button sends it to mail, a chat or a portal. On an iPhone, Safari puts it in Downloads in the Files app; the iPhone guide has the details. Nothing went to a server in between: the file went from your phone’s storage into the browser and back.
More also offers Save flattened PDF, which makes filled fields, marks and notes part of the page so nobody can change them, and the pages as PNG or JPG pictures.
If the tab closes before you save (a call comes in, the battery dies, the back button), the editor has kept a recovery copy in your browser a moment after your last change. Open getpdfs.app/edit again and choose Recover. Files over 200 MB get no recovery copy, and the status line in More says whether one is being kept.
When the phone runs out of memory
Everything happens on the phone, so the phone’s memory is the limit. The editor works within 70 % of the memory the browser reports, or 1.5 GB when the browser does not say (Safari does not), and never more than 1.8 GB. Opening a file holds about twice its size. When a file will not fit, the editor refuses it with a sentence that names both numbers (“Opening this file needs about … and this browser has about … to work with”) instead of crashing halfway.
The fix is to make the file lighter first. A big scan usually shrinks a lot: our 10-page, 17.6 MB colour scan comes out at 1.7 MB with the Email preset of Compress PDF. Make a PDF smaller explains the options. Or do that one job on a laptop.
What to leave for a bigger screen
The honest part. A phone is right for the quick correction, and the editor does not pretend otherwise:
- Layout work across many pages is slow 1 page at a time on a 6-inch screen.
- Fine positioning is hard when a finger covers the thing you are moving. Selecting several objects and using Style to line them up helps, but a mouse is quicker.
- Text does not reflow. A retyped line stays 1 line on any screen, and a longer fix runs further right rather than wrapping. On a phone you notice it later, so zoom out and check the line before saving.
- A scan holds no text. Double-tapping a scanned page selects the whole page picture. Run OCR PDF first, then edit.
For everything that is not a quick fix, the editing guide covers the whole editor, and everyday PDF jobs shows which tool fits which task.
Questions
Do I need to install an app to edit a PDF on my phone?
No. The editor is a web page: open getpdfs.app/edit in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or your phone's own browser, and it runs there. The first file you open fetches its 4.6 MB engine once; after that the browser keeps it.
Does it work offline once loaded?
Yes, after you have opened 1 file with a connection. That first file brings the engine down and the browser keeps it with the page. Then switch on aeroplane mode, open /edit again and edit: it works, because nothing needs a server.
What happens if I press the Android back button by mistake?
Back leaves the editor page. If you had made changes, open getpdfs.app/edit again: a box offers Pick up where you left off, with Recover and Discard. The copy it restores was kept in your browser, on the phone, a moment after your last change.
Is there a file size limit on a phone?
No fixed one. The limit is the phone's memory: opening a file holds about twice its size, and the editor works within 70 % of the memory the browser reports, or 1.5 GB when it does not say. A file that will not fit is refused with a sentence that gives both numbers.
Is editing on an iPhone different?
The editor is the same in Safari. Where the file comes from (Files) and where the saved copy lands (Downloads in Files) differ, and the iPhone has its own Preview app for forms and signatures. The iPhone guide covers both.
